The Antiquity tradition emerged from a long European appetite for carpets that look as if they have already lived a life. Workshops in northern India learned to read the soft, time-blunted palettes of late-Safavid weaving and rebuild them on the loom with a controlled fade in the wool wash. The ivory ground in this rug is the result of that approach, neither bleached nor pristine, but settled into the colour of old paper.
Three weavers shared the loom for around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, knotted with the Persian asymmetric tie that allows the curvilinear vine work in the field to register without breaking into pixelated steps. After the rug came off the loom it received a graded wash that draws the saturation back from the new-wool brightness toward the colour of an antique.
The composition
An ivory field carries muted ochre palmettes and a thinned indigo vine that travels corner to corner without a strict axis. The border is restrained, a single guard in burnt sienna rather than the layered borders that turn busier rugs anxious. Light moves across the surface differently depending on time of day, picking up the grain in the hand-spun yarn. The palette pairs naturally with bleached oak, walnut, brass, and unpolished marble.
What you are buying
Antique Indo-Persian carpets in this scale and condition rarely come to market under twenty thousand dollars at the European auction houses. This is a new weaving in the same idiom, on the same kind of loom, with the same fibre choice and the same wash sequence. A hand-knotted wool rug of this density appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the ivory ground will only deepen toward bone over the next ten years.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits comfortably under a six- to eight-seat dining table or in a primary living area. The ivory ground brightens rooms with low natural light and reads softer against warm-white walls than it does against true white. The rug handles upholstery in linen, leather, and brushed cotton without competing for attention.
Conservation
Rotate the rug by a half turn twice a year so that wear, light, and footfall distribute evenly. Vacuum weekly using suction only, with the beater bar lifted off the wool. Address spills by blotting from the outside in with a clean cotton cloth. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years to keep the foundation supple.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
