The Antoinette palette belongs to a quieter strain of European drawing-room taste, the kind of softened, lightly faded ground that became fashionable in country houses by the late nineteenth century when collectors began to prefer wool that looked already lived with. The Susse motif draws on this lineage. A central panel of beige washed against the slightly cooler ivory of the field, with floral arabesques running through both in tones close enough to read as a single cloud rather than as outlined drawing.
Two weavers shared the loom for roughly four months. About 1.4 million asymmetric knots were tied row by row, each pass packed down with a wooden comb against the cotton warp. The pile is hand-spun wool, yarn-dyed in the skein before weaving, then finished with a luster wash that draws lanolin back into the fibre. The wool was left longer than the contemporary norm so the surface keeps the slight irregularity that catches light and gives the colour its mellow quality across the face of the rug.
The composition
A layered beige ground with the floral pattern set just barely above it, like a rubbing rather than a print. The arabesques carry a faint warm undertone where the dye took a second pass, which is why the field reads as having depth rather than as a single flat tone. The colour will continue to lighten over the first decade of use as the lanolin redistributes, and the contrast between figure and ground will narrow rather than widen. The rug looks restrained at purchase and grows quieter from there.
What you are buying
European antique floor-coverings of comparable scale and condition trade through Bonhams and Sotheby's at three to six times this number when they appear in clean state. This is a contemporary weaving of the same character, on a vertical loom, in hand-spun wool, with the slight inconsistencies that come from a hand. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. It is one of the few household objects with that property at this price point.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the working scale for a sitting area built around a pair of armchairs and a low table, or for a primary bedroom under the foot of the bed. The beige ground holds well against pale lime-washed walls and against deeper plaster greys. It pairs with linen upholstery, oak floors, and unframed paper or canvas. It does not compete with strong painted colour in the room.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn every six months so foot traffic and light age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the piece every five to seven years to lift embedded soil. With this care the rug runs sixty to eighty years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
