Pit-loom dhurries belong to a centuries-old Indian textile vocabulary that produced the floor coverings of palaces and the bedding of farmhouses with equal authority. The flatweave structure is the form's signature. The flatweave structure is the oldest rug form, predating knotted pile by several centuries in the archaeological record. There is no pile to crush, no knot to untie. Wear distributes evenly across the surface, which is why nineteenth-century kilims and dhurries in private collections still see daily use after a hundred years.

Hand-woven in India over 3 weeks on a horizontal flatweave loom. The structure is weft-faced, which means the neutral pattern is built up row by row from coloured weft passing over and under a hidden warp. There is no pile and no knotting. The drawing belongs entirely to the weave.

The composition

The neutral pattern is built up row by row from coloured weft. There is no pile to crush, no knot to wear, only the weave itself. The flat profile means both faces are usable, although the front carries the cleaner finish. The weave is dense enough to hold its shape under furniture. The flat profile makes the rug easy to roll, store, and move between rooms or seasons. The structure is forgiving of rearrangement.

The piece in a room

4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) works under a child's bedroom, a study, or a corner library. The flat profile slides under low furniture without bunching. The drawing pairs cleanly with mid-tone walls in clay, putty, or oat. Architecture in stone or wood lets the rug carry the colour. A thin felted underlay keeps the flatweave from slipping on a polished floor and protects the underside from grit. The rug can be lifted and aired in dry weather without specialist handling.

Care

Vacuum weekly with suction only, never a beater bar, which can pull the weft. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth. A flatweave can be lifted and shaken out of doors, which is part of the reason it has survived as a household textile for centuries. Professional clean every three to four years. Stored flat or rolled rather than folded, the rug holds shape indefinitely.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
