The composition descends from a contemporary Turkish design vocabulary, one that takes its cues equally from the kilim and the European studio textile of the last half-century. Nothing in the field repeats as a tile; the rug is built to read as a single still image.

The palette is held in a beige register, carried across the field at considered density. Several proofing rounds were needed to settle the colour relationships before the studio approved the cartoon for production.

The composition

The principal colour is a beige register. Around it the secondary palette is held in restrained register, so the rug carries one structural value and the geometry serves it rather than the reverse. Hand-spun wool tightens into the foundation as the piece settles in, and the surface continues to change in tone across the first year of normal use. Up close the surface carries the trace of every step of the hand process; from across the room it gathers into one settled colour.

The fibre

The yarn is polypropylene, heat-set so the colour is fixed at temperature rather than printed on the surface. The fibre is dimensionally stable, holds its dye against direct sunlight, and releases pigmented spills before they bond. The pile takes the weight of furniture without permanent compression and does not shed loose fibre across the working life of the rug.

The piece in a room

At 5'3" x 7'6" the piece works as the conversation floor of a contemporary flat. The composition extends past the front of the seating arrangement, with enough margin between sofa edge and rug border that the design reads whole. Pairs naturally with brass, walnut, and brushed bronze; reads cleanly against pale lime-washed walls.

Care

Care is essentially minimal. A weekly run of the vacuum is enough for surface dust; the construction tolerates a beater bar without damage. Spills release with a damp cloth and a drop of mild detergent. For more difficult marks, a cold machine wash works; the rug folds into a domestic drum and dries flat in a couple of hours.
