The dhurrie is the flatweave rug of the Indian subcontinent. Cotton or wool, woven on a horizontal loom, no pile, often reversible. Mughal-era palaces ordered them by the dozen. The drawing below sits in that direct, unornamented tradition.

The piece was hand-woven in India over 4 weeks on a horizontal loom by 2 weavers. There are no knots. The long-fibre jute weft is passed through the warp with a shuttle and beaten down with a comb at every pick, building the design by colour change rather than by surface pile. The result is a flat rug that lies low to the floor and reads as a single piece of textile rather than as a layered surface. Each colour change in the field corresponds to a deliberate hand-bound interlock in the weave, which is what holds the design crisp at the edges. The piece reads at 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) in ivory and blue, finished in India.

The composition

Flat, weft-faced colour blocks in ivory and blue build the design by direct juxtaposition, with the small slits at every colour change that flatweaves always carry. There is no pile to hide behind, so every line is the line the weaver intended. The rug ages by losing dye depth at the surface only, never by matting, and a flatweave that comes off a horizontal loom built well lasts as long as a knotted rug of the same fibre.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits under a two-seat sofa and a narrow coffee table, or anchors a writing desk in a study. The ivory register holds against pale walls and against warm wood floors with equal authority. Position the sofa with the front legs on the rug and the back legs on the floor. The composition holds at a low viewing angle from a seated position, which is the angle most of the day will be spent looking at it.

Care

A flatweave responds well to a light vacuum and a periodic shake outdoors. Blot spills, never scrub. The piece is reversible, which doubles its working life if rotated. Professional cleaning every three years is enough.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
