Contemporary Indian wool work began to look outward in the late twentieth century, picking up the language of European modernism and translating it back into the loom. The cream and green palette in this rug belongs to that conversation. A wide quiet field, an undertone of botanical green pulled across it in soft repeats, the kind of design that reads as composition first and pattern second.

Three weavers shared the upright loom for roughly five months. The pile is hand-spun wool from the Himalayan foothills, dyed in small lots so the green carries faint shifts from one batch to the next. Around 1.4 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by feel, row by row, against a cotton warp.

The composition

A cream ground that pushes light back into the room and a single tonal green threaded through it without competing. The green is layered, not flat. In daylight it reads sage. Under lamplight it pulls toward moss. The pile is sheared evenly to let the cream act as the dominant value, with the green emerging only when the eye settles. Over years of use the wool will polish and the green will deepen by half a stop.

What you are buying

Indian hand-knotted contemporaries in this fibre and density routinely retail at the equivalent of two-and-a-half lakh through Western dealers, and the rug is offered here at less than half that. A wool rug at this knot count is an object that appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and there is no other floor covering with that property at the price.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) covers the central seating arrangement of a primary living area or fits cleanly under a six-seat dining table with chairs pushed back. The cream ground works against pale plaster walls and against deep walnut joinery in equal measure. Brass and aged oak read warmly against it. Linen upholstery in oatmeal or putty disappears into the field and lets the green do the speaking.

Conservation

Rotate the rug end to end every six months so foot traffic and daylight age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge inward. A trained wool conservator should hand-wash the piece every four to six years to restore lanolin and lift embedded dust.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
