The shag rug is what happens when a workshop tradition meets the mid-century living room. Long pile, deep tactile body, low-contrast field. The reference points run from the Anatolian tulu through the Swedish ryamatta to the California modernist house, and the rug in front of you sits inside that line.

The work took six to seven weeks of loom time under Two. Hand-spun wool, plant-derived dye, charted cartoon. The composition was built up against the warp row by row and washed at finish to bring the colour to its final saturation. The piece carries the irregularities that distinguish hand work from machine reproduction.

The composition

A red register is what the composition is for. The pattern is the device that delivers the colour at room scale; the design is in service of the palette rather than the other way around. The wool was hand-spun and the dyes prepared in small batches, so the field carries the quiet unevenness that the human hand leaves on every step of the process. The piece reads as patina from the day it is unrolled, rather than acquiring patina across years of wear.

The piece in a room

5' x 7' fits the central living arrangement of a small or medium flat. The rug is sized so the seating sits inside it on the front legs and the conversation circle is held inside its margins. The geometry is read whole from the threshold of the room and the colour resolves into its full saturation under afternoon light.

Care

Vacuum the surface once a week on suction. Both faces of the flatweave are usable, so the piece should be flipped at six-month intervals to even wear. Treat spills with a damp cotton cloth and cool water, blotting outward to inward. Dry-clean the rug every three to four years through a wool-trained cleaner to keep the foundation clear and the dye bright.
