The Persian classical vocabulary that this rug works inside developed in the Safavid court workshops of the sixteenth century and migrated outward across four hundred years of trade. The medallion, the floral field, the multi-band border. The pattern in this piece is a faithful translation of that inheritance into a fibre engineered for high-traffic contemporary use.

The pattern is held in a digital cartoon and translated to the loom one row at a time. Every colour change is electronically registered against the original studio drawing, which is why the motif holds clean across the full surface without the slow registration drift longer pieces tend to develop.

The fibre

Heat-set synthetic yarn at a density engineered for traffic. The fibre is colourfast under direct sunlight, resistant to most household stains, and forgiving of furniture compression. The pile is built to hold its appearance across a long household life cycle, with no specialist conservation schedule to keep up with.

The composition

A central medallion holds the eye, the corner-pieces echo it at scale, and the border closes the composition without overcrowding it. The colour is held in the deeper tones with the field opened up by the lighter ground. The dominant tones read as red.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the canonical scale for a primary living room with a sectional or two facing sofas above it. The composition is built to be read from the standing height of someone walking into the room. Pairs with both saturated wall colour and lime-washed neutral plaster. Engineered for traffic the wool tier would not survive. A primary corridor, a dining floor, a lobby, a child's room. The pattern reads as a considered ground rather than as a budget compromise, and the construction holds up under the kind of household life that would shorten the life of a hand-knotted piece.

Care

Vacuum once a week on standard setting. Blot spills with a clean cloth; the heat-set yarn does not absorb most stains. The pile is engineered to recover from compression, so the marks left by furniture lift on their own within hours of moving the piece.
