Sari silk carpets came out of a recycling tradition: the wedding silks of the subcontinent are too valuable to discard when they begin to fray, and weavers learned to unpick them, hand-spin the fibre into a usable yarn, and tie the resulting strand into carpets that hold the lustre of the original silk while carrying the tonal complexity of dozens of source garments. The Eros pattern works that fibre into a navy field with abstract motion, more painterly than geometric.

Two to three weavers shared the loom for close to five months. The pile is hand-spun recycled sari silk on a cotton foundation, knotted with the Persian asymmetric tie. The fibre arrives in colour, drawn from the original garments, which means the navy ground carries flecks of cobalt, midnight, indigo, and an occasional thread of unrelated colour that the weaver kept rather than picked out. The texture is silk-soft, with the high reflective sheen the fibre is known for.

The composition

Navy reads almost black in shadow and lifts to a deep cobalt where direct light catches the field. The abstract motion across the surface is irregular, drawn from the chance patterning of the recycled fibre rather than from a cartoon, and the rug looks meaningfully different from morning light to evening lamplight. Pairs with brass, walnut, dark leather, lacquered surfaces, and pale plaster walls. The silk darkens by a half tone over the first five years and gains depth.

What you are buying

Comparable hand-knotted silk carpets in this scale, regardless of the recycled fibre source, sell through Sotheby's and the European silk dealers in the eight to fifteen thousand dollar range. This piece is hand-tied in genuine silk on a cotton foundation; the construction is identical to a contemporary silk rug of any provenance. A silk rug of this density appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a smaller drawing room or sits under the foot of a king bed in a primary bedroom. Silk carpets respond to controlled foot traffic; the navy field makes the most of a low-light study or a dining nook with directional lamps. Pairs poorly with high-traffic open-plan spaces and direct sunlight, which the silk pile registers more sensitively than wool would.

Conservation

Rotate by a half turn every six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar fully disengaged; silk pile is more delicate than wool and a beater bar will fibre-burst the surface. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, never rub. A silk-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every six to eight years using a pH-neutral wash.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
