The pattern in front of you descends from a tradition of village and workshop weaving that crossed Persia, the Caucasus, and Anatolia for two centuries. The geometry is older than any of the towns it was woven in, and the colour discipline was refined by generations of weavers who never met one another. The line continues here.

A single weaver carried the loom for 3 months on this piece. Approximately 417,600 hand-tied knots at around 145 per square inch on a cotton foundation. Hand-spun wool dyed in small lots from madder, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull, each batch matured for two to three weeks in copper vats before the wool was lowered.

The composition

Latch-hook diamonds run the long axis of the rug. The red grounds the composition; the ivory works as relief above it. Each batch of wool was dyed separately, which gives the field a faint abrash that registers only at distance. The rug arrives ready to begin a long life under foot.

An equivalent piece sourced through a London or New York dealer runs at three to five times this number once shipping, duty, and margin are layered on. The work is the same. The wool is the same. The dye is the same. What you are paying for at this price is the rug itself, without the chain of resale that inflates equivalents abroad.

The piece in a room

At 2'6" × 8' (76 × 244 cm) the piece is a long runner. It carries a corridor, a galley kitchen, the foot of a long bed, or a stair landing where furniture is not meant to interrupt it. The red reads as a continuous line across the length rather than as a centred composition.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year. Vacuum suction only. Blot spills, never rub. Keep the rug out of permanent damp and away from radiators. Hand-wash every five years by a conservator who understands wool and vegetable dye. The rug will run a century and pass to the next generation.
