Beni Ourain weavers in the Atlas mountains north of the Sahara produced cream wool rugs marked with sparse dark diamonds for over a century before European modernists brought them into the global design vocabulary. Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, and Eames placed them under their furniture for the same reason designers do now. The geometry is incidental rather than insistent.

A single weaver carried the loom for 3 months on this piece. Approximately 64,800 hand-tied knots at around 75 per square inch on a cotton foundation. Hand-spun wool dyed in small lots from madder, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull, each batch matured for two to three weeks in copper vats before the wool was lowered.

The composition

Stepped octagons anchor the corners. The ivory grounds the composition; the ivory works as relief above it. The palette settles into the deep saturations that vegetable dye holds without ever flattening. Direct sunlight helps; UV restores the dye depth that interior light slowly washes out.

New weaving in the Mahal manner, on the same kind of vertical loom, in vegetable-dyed wool, is the working alternative for the collector who wants the look without the resale chain. The rug holds value indefinitely.

The piece in a room

At 2' × 3' (61 × 91 cm) the rug serves as an entry mat, a bedside accent, or a sample of the weave under a small console. The ivory reads at close range, where the latch-hook detail registers as drawing rather than as graphic.

Conservation

Turn the rug end for end every six months so the pile compacts evenly under traffic. Vacuum with suction only, never a beater bar. Address spills immediately with a dry cotton cloth. A specialist hand-wash every five to seven years restores lustre. The piece is built to outlast the room it is placed in.
