Gabbeh weaving comes from the nomadic Qashqai of southern Persia, prized for thick wool, simplified figuration, and the freedom that comes from working without a cartoon. This rug carries that approach, hand-knotted in India.
A small team shared the loom for several months. The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted by feel against a vertical beam on a cotton foundation. The dye palette was prepared in small batches before the wool was lowered into the vats, the way every long-lived rug has been finished for two hundred years. The cartoon was followed loosely; small hand-driven irregularities in the field are the signature of a piece woven without a power-driven aid.
The composition
A red and black ground, a tribal Gabbeh pattern in deeper tones, and a quietly drawn border. The rug is built to age. Saturation softens, contrast deepens, the field warms. A naturally dyed wool of this kind does not arrive complete; it arrives ready to start.
What you are buying
The price is held by the workshop pricing this piece as new production rather than as a collector lot. The construction, the wool, the knot density, and the drawing are all auction grade. The piece appreciates with use; ten years in, it reads like a softened antique rather than a new rug.
The piece in a room
Used at the size as listed, the piece works as a medium living area, primary bedroom, or formal sitting room. Soft bone, putty, or lime-washed plaster walls let the red and black field settle as a considered ground. The drawing reads from a standing viewer, then resolves at chair-side. Furniture sits on the rug rather than around it.
Conservation
A hand-knotted rug wants slow, careful maintenance. Rotate twice a year, vacuum without a beater bar, keep the underside dry, and have a wool conservator wash the rug every five to seven years. The pile compacts into the foundation with use; this is preservation, not wear.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
