Black grounds in Ziegler weaving are an unusual choice with a specific consequence. The dark field pulls the floral drawing forward as if it were lit from behind, and turns the surrounding palette of ivory, ochre, and faded rose into something closer to enamel work than to a printed textile. Period weavers reserved the choice for buyers who wanted a rug that worked at night, under candlelight or low electric, rather than one that depended on daylight.
About 2.4 million asymmetric knots, tied across roughly five months by three weavers sharing a vertical loom in India. The wool is hand-spun and double-plied so the pile holds an even cut on a black ground, where any unevenness shows. The black itself was built from indigo overdyed with iron-mordanted walnut, the only way to reach a true neutral black in a vegetable system without dulling the drawing that sits on top.
The composition
A jet black field with a softly drawn central medallion in ivory and faded ochre, surrounded by a vine scroll that thins toward the corners. The drawing is restrained on purpose; with this much black around it, anything more decorative would compete with the ground. The border is a single ivory guard band. Over time the field will lighten by perhaps fifteen percent toward a deep charcoal, and the ivory will warm into the colour of old paper.
What you are buying
Period Ziegler carpets with intact black grounds sell at international auction for fifty thousand US dollars and up when they appear at all, since dark-ground pieces rarely survive heavy use. This is a fresh weaving in the same drawing tradition with equivalent dye preparation and knot density. The rug is an asset that gains character through use rather than losing it. That is the practical case for buying a hand-knotted rug at this price.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living room or a six-to-eight seat dining footprint. The black ground sits beautifully against pale walls and pale wood, where it functions as a graphic ground rather than a heavy element. Avoid strongly patterned upholstery; the rug is the pattern in the room.
Conservation
Rotate end for end twice a year. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and never rub a black wool pile, since friction lifts loose fibre and shows lighter beneath. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. With that care the rug runs decades and gains the slight luminosity old wool develops with use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
