A transitional rug works as a quiet anchor. No competing focal points, no busy borders, just a considered field that gives the room its ground without asking for the eye. The discipline is in the editing; many of the strongest tufted designs are the ones the studio kept simple when the temptation to add was strong.
Two tufters worked the design over about four weeks, with a finisher cutting and trimming the surface by hand at the end. The wool is pushed through canvas row by row from the back of the work, then sheared from the front to set the pile depth. The scrim and latex on the underside hold the structure.
The composition
The transitional composition in grey has the discipline of restrained colour. Two or three close values do the work that lesser rugs achieve with five or six clashing tones. The result is a surface that ages into the room rather than pulling against it. Light handling matters: under cool daylight the field reads cooler, under warm lamp light the rug pulls toward the warmer end of the palette.
The piece in a room
A 5' x 8' (152 × 244 cm) rug works as the centre of a small living grouping, under a queen bed, or in a dining nook for four to six. The grey palette gives the room its ground without claiming the focal position. The rug behaves as the architectural plane the furniture floats on, which is the proper job of a rug at this scale; the eye should land on the seating or the art, not on the floor itself.
Care
Suction vacuum weekly. Blot spills with cool water and a clean cloth. Light shedding settles inside two months and does not affect the body of the rug. A professional dry clean every two to three years keeps the wool fresh and the latex backing sound. Use an underlay sized to the rug to prevent slipping and to extend the life of the backing.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
