The hunting rug is a Safavid invention. Court weavers in sixteenth-century Iran repurposed the formal medallion field as a stage for figural narrative, leopards chasing antelope, hunters drawing bows, paradisical trees holding the corners. The form has survived in the workshop tradition because the figural challenge is a test of weaver skill.

Two weavers shared the loom for five to six months. About 1.0 million knots tied row by row from a paper cartoon. Wool was hand-spun and plant-dyed in small batches before weaving began.

The composition

Rust and navy grounds the composition. The design works against this register rather than competing with it, which is the older discipline in rug making. The colour was prepared in copper vats from plant sources, and the slight shifts in saturation across the field are the trace of small-batch dyeing rather than any lapse in the workshop process. The colour will deepen by half a stop across the first year as the wool oxidises against ambient light, and another half stop across the next decade of use.

What you are buying

Look at the auction record. Carpets of this lineage, scale and knot density carry attribution premiums that put antique pieces well past this number. This is a new weaving by a workshop trained in the same vocabulary, and it appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the only property of its kind in domestic furnishing.

The piece in a room

At 5' x 8' the piece works as the conversation floor of a contemporary flat. The composition extends past the front of the seating arrangement, with enough margin between sofa edge and rug border that the design reads whole. Pairs naturally with brass, walnut, and brushed bronze; reads cleanly against pale lime-washed walls.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the rug evenly across both ends of the field. Vacuum weekly with suction only, the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth and work from the outside in; never rub or scrub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years to clear the foundation and refresh the dye. With this care the rug runs sixty to a hundred years and outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
