The composition in this rug grew out of contemporary studio work that runs through Scandinavian modernism, mid-century textile design, and the open colour fields of post-war painting. A black ground broken by graphic incident, the densities tightening and opening across the field so the eye moves rather than landing on a single focal point. The studio worked the cartoon in graphite and ink for several months before approving the design for production. The pattern asks for a quiet room around it and rewards being the only graphic surface in the composition.

The fibre

Heat-set polypropylene. The colour is locked in by temperature rather than by surface dye, which is why saturation does not fade under direct sunlight the way pigment printing fades. The fibre resists staining at the molecular level, so spilled juice, wine, oil or coffee lift with a damp cloth before they set. The pile stays flat under furniture and does not shed. Cleaning is a matter of routine vacuuming and the occasional damp wipe.

The composition

Black ground, measured incident in the field, restrained borders. The colour is tonal rather than flat. Heat-set polypropylene dyed in small batches gives the surface the slight bloom that mass-dyed yarn never carries. Over the next few seasons the saturation will settle in and the lighter tones will warm into the field rather than dulling against it. The pattern is paced so that the eye moves through the rug rather than catching on any one motif.

At 5'3" x 7'4" (5'3" x 7'4" (160 x 224 cm)), the rug anchors a medium living area or a primary bedroom with the bed sitting on its top third. The black field gives a considered ground for low upholstery and for a coffee table that sits squarely inside the rug rather than spanning its edges.

Care

Vacuum weekly. Spot clean with mild detergent on a clean damp cloth. The rug at this scale folds to fit a domestic drum if a spill resists spot cleaning; wash on a 30 degree cold cycle and dry flat in a few hours. No professional cleaning is required for routine maintenance and the colour does not fade under household light.
