Recycled sari silk takes vegetable and reactive dye in ways virgin silk does not, because the original garments were dyed first and the fibre brings that history into the new yarn. The brown field in this rug is the result of layering the resist-dye logic of ikat over a base fibre that already carries variation in tone. The motifs sit with the soft edge that the ikat process produces, and the brown reads warmer than a flat-dyed silk would because of the underlying complexity of the source.

Two to three weavers shared the loom for around five months. The pile is hand-spun recycled sari silk, drawn from unpicked saris and re-spun into a usable rug yarn, tied in the Persian asymmetric knot on a cotton foundation. The rug was sheared close after weaving so the ikat motifs read crisp against the brown ground. The total knot count runs higher than wool would at the same scale because silk takes a tighter knot.

The composition

Brown carries cream and faded ochre ikat motifs that drift vertically through the field. The colour reads chocolate in flat overhead light and warmer chestnut where direct light strikes the surface; silk pile shifts more dramatically with viewing angle than wool does. The flecks in the recycled fibre give the brown a tonal depth, with hints of bronze, copper, and amber sitting under the dominant tone. The rug will gain rather than lose character through the first decade.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted silk carpets of this scale routinely sell through the European silk dealers in the ten to eighteen thousand dollar range. The recycled fibre origin gives this piece a more sustainable provenance than virgin silk while the construction is identical. A silk rug of this density appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the brown palette will hold its warmth through generations.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a smaller living room or sits under the foot of a king bed. The brown ground pairs naturally with cream upholstery, walnut and oak floors, brass lamps, and warm-white walls. Reads particularly well in a study or a library with directional lamp light, where the silk lustre registers most clearly. Avoid direct hot sunlight.

Conservation

Rotate the rug by a half turn every six months so footfall and light distribute evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar lifted; silk pile is more sensitive than wool to mechanical contact. Spills should be blotted immediately with a clean cotton cloth and cool water. A silk-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every six to eight years with a pH-neutral solution.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
