Ikat is a resist-dye discipline, not a weave. The yarn is bound and dyed in patterned bundles before any of it touches a loom, so the figures in the cloth carry a soft edge that no print can imitate. Central Asian, Indonesian and Indian traditions all converge on the technique.

About around four months on the loom, with Two hands at work. The yarn was tied off and dyed in small batches before weaving began, then strung on the warp with the figures already embedded. Every irregularity in the registration is built into the medium.

The composition

A ivory register forms the structural ground of the composition. The pattern is set into the field at a scale that resolves at room distance, with the secondary palette held in service of the principal value. The wool is hand-spun and the dye batches were small enough that the field carries a quiet tonal drift across its full length. Saturation tightens under lamp light and lifts in daylight, so the rug carries two slightly different registers across the working day.

What you are buying

A hand-knotted rug of this density is the rare furnishing object that holds value across decades of use. Auction records for antique workshop pieces in the same lineage put comparable rugs well above this number whenever they surface. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the wool deepens into the dye and the design tightens against the cotton foundation as the rug settles in.

The piece in a room

At 4' x 6' the piece is bedside or hallway scale. The composition is sized to be read at close range and rewards the slow look. The rug sits naturally under a single armchair with a side table or beneath a hall console with a small mirror above it; the surrounding furniture can be kept restrained.

Conservation

The rug responds to slow, consistent care rather than to occasional intensive cleaning. Rotate end for end at six-month intervals so light and traffic age the field evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged; the suction alone is enough to lift surface dust. Blot, do not rub, when something spills. Schedule a hand wash by a wool conservator every five years. The piece will run a working life of seventy to a hundred years on this regimen and pass to a second owner in good order.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
