Ikat is a resist-dye discipline rather than a weave. The pattern is bound into the threads before they reach the loom, so the colour and the structure arrive together rather than being applied to a finished cloth. The blurred edges that distinguish ikat from any other patterned textile are an artefact of the dye seeping a fraction past the binding, and weavers across South and Central Asia have spent centuries refining how much blur to allow. The composition in this rug is drawn from that tradition and translated into the language of pile.

This 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) rug is hand-knotted in recycled sari silk, the long cellulose fibres salvaged from used silk garments and respun by hand. Three to four weavers shared the loom for around six months, tying knot after knot against a cotton foundation. Sari silk takes dye differently from new mulberry silk because the underlying fibre carries traces of its first life, which is what gives the colour its characteristic depth and slight unevenness across the field.

The composition

A light blue ground carrying ikat-derived motifs in deeper indigo, with secondary bands in cream and silver. The silk catches light directionally, so the field shifts in tone as the viewer moves around the room. From one angle the blue reads pale and aqueous; from the opposite angle it reads as a denser teal. This optical behaviour is the hallmark of a silk-pile rug and is impossible to reproduce in wool at any density.

What you are buying

Antique silk carpets in this scale, even those of recent provenance, sit in the $25,000 to $50,000 range at international auction. Recycled sari silk lowers the material cost without sacrificing the optical behaviour, which is why it has become the medium of choice for serious contemporary silk weavings. At £,78,299 the rug is priced against the labour of six months at the loom. A hand-knotted silk rug of this density holds its value indefinitely with proper care.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' is the canonical drawing-room scale. The light blue palette and the optical play of silk both flourish in rooms with high ceilings and indirect daylight. Pair with cool plaster walls, with light woods such as ash or oak, and with upholstery in stone, ivory, or pale grey. Avoid placing the rug in direct continuous sunlight, which fades silk faster than wool.

Conservation

Rotate one half turn twice a year. Vacuum monthly, suction only, with the beater bar off. Silk is more delicate than wool and a beater bar will pull fibres from the pile within weeks. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth and call a silk-trained conservator for any stain larger than a coin. Professional hand-cleaning every four years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
