Jute has been woven on the floor looms of eastern India for centuries, the long bast fibres stripped from the stalk, retted in slow water, then twisted into a yarn strong enough to take both the weft beat and the foot traffic of an open hall. The kilim flatweave geometry in this dhurrie keeps the loom-paced rhythm of the old floor coverings, where structure was the decoration and colour was kept to the natural tones of the plant.

This piece was woven in India over around 2 weeks by 1 weaver. The yarn was set on a horizontal loom, the warps tensioned and the wefts beaten down by hand with a heavy comb. There are no knots. The same surface reads from both faces, which means the rug can be turned over to even out wear or to show the fresher side after years of use.

The composition

The palette holds ivory, oat, and faded ochre. The structure is reversible and flat, with the pattern coming directly from the interlock of warp and weft rather than from a printed or knotted overlay. The fibre takes light differently from a cut pile. It catches a low matte sheen rather than a deep gloss, which is why a flat-woven floor reads as honest rather than ornamental. The surface ages by softening at the edges and developing a slight burnish where feet move through the room most often, the kind of patina that connects the rug to the rest of the long-lived objects in a home.

What you are buying

Flat weaves were the daily floor textile of Indian households long before knotted carpets became a status object. The construction is honest, the labour is visible in every weft, and the price reflects yarn and time rather than the import duty and gallery margin that sit on the same kind of work in a Western showroom. A piece of this sort is the entry point to collecting hand-finished floor work and a sound choice for a room that needs texture without the weight of pile.

The piece in a room

At 4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm), the rug sits well in a sitting area, beneath a small dining table, or at the foot of a bed. The flat profile slides cleanly under low-clearance furniture and door swings without catching.

Care

Vacuum on a low setting with the beater bar off. Shake out smaller pieces seasonally to lift loose grit from the weave. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent; allow the jute to air dry fully before laying it flat again. Avoid prolonged damp, which weakens any natural floor fibre over time. Rotate or flip annually so wear distributes across both faces.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
