The pattern in this rug came out of contemporary textile studios working in conversation with mid-century European geometry. An asymmetric composition in multi, calibrated so the field reads as a single considered ground rather than a repeating tile. The graph was worked in chalk and ink for several months before being approved for the loom.

The composition holds at a distance and resolves into its discrete elements on approach. The asymmetry is what keeps the eye moving across the field rather than landing in one place.

The studio worked the cartoon in chalk and ink at half scale before approving it for the loom. The proportions were tested against a sample run and corrected three times before commitment to production. The discipline behind a loom-finished rug sits in the front-end design work rather than in the weaving itself.

The Kaylen cartoon was the studio's pick of the season; it carried into production with no revisions to the original graph.

The fibre

Heat-set polypropylene. The yarn is engineered so the colour is locked in by temperature rather than by surface dye, which is why the saturation does not fade under direct sunlight the way pigment printing fades. The fibre resists staining at the molecular level: spilled drinks, oil, and coffee lift with a damp cloth before they set. The pile stays flat under furniture and does not shed.

The composition

The composition is built around a multi field that holds the geometry without competing with it. Tonal lots vary subtly across the rug, the controlled irregularity that separates a real hand-finished surface from any industrial alternative. The borders are kept narrow so the eye is not pulled to the edges; the design holds in the field where it belongs. Under raking light the pattern lifts a fraction above the ground; under flat overhead light it settles into a single plane. Both readings are intended.

The piece in a room

5' × 7' (152 × 213 cm) is the canonical scale for a small living area, a primary bedroom, or under a four-seat dining table. The multi composition holds the room without claiming it. Mid-tone walls let the field settle; bright walls push it forward.

Care

Vacuum on the regular cycle. Spot clean with a damp cloth. The synthetic fibre resists staining at the molecular level; spilled drinks, oil, and food lift before they set. No specialist care needed across the working life of the piece. A rug pad underneath holds the rug flat and dampens foot traffic.
