The design grew out of a small studio working in conversation with mid-century Scandinavian geometry. Pattern at room scale, no centre, no border, only the gradual rebalance of weight from one quadrant to another.

The pattern began as a drawing in the studio, was rendered into a digital cartoon, and reaches the loom as a colour code the jacquard mechanism reads one warp at a time. The discipline is closer to the planning of an offset print than to the improvisation of a hand-knotted weaving, and it is the source of the pattern's clean register.

The fibre

Heat-set polypropylene yarn. The colour is locked into the fibre by temperature rather than printed on the surface, which is why saturation does not fade under direct sunlight the way pigment-printed cloth fades. The yarn resists staining at the molecular level, so spilled wine, juice, or coffee lift with a damp cloth before they have a chance to set. The pile stays flat under furniture and does not shed across the life of the rug.

The composition

The composition reads as a single graphic gesture rather than as a tiled pattern. Negative space carries as much weight as the line work. The piece is built to recede when it should and to assert when it should. The dominant tones read as black.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the canonical scale for a primary living room with a sectional or two facing sofas above it. The composition is built to be read from the standing height of someone walking into the room. The piece carries an interior that asks for a graphic ground without an antique commitment. Engineered for traffic the wool tier would not survive. A primary corridor, a dining floor, a lobby, a child's room. The pattern reads as a considered ground rather than as a budget compromise, and the construction holds up under the kind of household life that would shorten the life of a hand-knotted piece.

Care

Vacuum weekly. Spot clean with mild detergent on a clean cloth. The heat-set fibre resists staining at the molecular level, which means most spills lift before they set if addressed quickly. The pile recovers from furniture compression on its own. No professional cleaning required.
