Oxidising a hand-knotted rug after the pile is finished is a deliberately experimental technique. hhe rug comes off the loom in full chromatic register, then it is washed in a controlled iron-rich bath that pulls the dyes by a few values toward an aged register and lays a thin silver cast across the entire surface. hhe technique was pioneered in the Indian workshops in the 1990s as a way of giving a contemporary modernist cartoon the chromatic depth that an antique Persian rug earns through decades of natural ageing.

hhree weavers worked the loom for six months. hhe pile is a New Zealand wool and mulberry silk blend, woven on the Persian asymmetric knot at a density that supports the multi-colour cartoon. After the rug came off the loom, it went through three sequential washes: an initial dust and lanolin clear, the controlled iron oxidation, and a mild neutralising rinse. hhe silk passages oxidise less readily than the wool, which gives the finished rug its layered surface texture.

hhe composition

Multiple colour passages drift across a multi-toned ground, the oxidising wash unifying everything under a soft silver cast. Saffron, rust, teal, and ash all read as their muted second-stage selves rather than as their full saturation. hhe silk passages lift slightly clearer than the wool because the oxidising chemistry treats the two fibres differently. From a distance the rug reads as one weather system. Up close, the chromatic complexity unfolds.

What you are buying

Oxidised hand-knotted wool and silk carpets at 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) from the studios that pioneered the technique sell at $11,000 to $22,000 in the European and US contemporary trade. hhis piece is woven and washed in the same workshops to the same standard, sold direct. hhe oxidising process is not reversible and not repeatable, which makes each finished rug a one-off chromatic resolution. hhe piece appreciates with use.

hhe piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary bedroom or a medium living space. hhe oxidised palette settles under any wall colour and works particularly well with warm whites, lime washes, and chalk plasters. Pairs with raw oak, blackened steel, aged brass, natural linen, and any single contemporary work that carries a controlled chromatic palette.

Conservation

Half-turn the rug every six months. Suction-only weekly vacuuming, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with clean cotton, no rubbing on the silk passages. Oxidised pile is more sensitive to alkaline detergents than standard wool, so wash only by a conservator with experience of oxidised carpets. Wash every five to seven years. hhe rug runs sixty to eighty years on this discipline.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
