Hand-woven rugs sit at the intersection of textile and wall hanging. There is no pile to hide behind. Every line of weft has to be placed with the colour and the structure understood at the same moment. The result is a flat composition that reveals the discipline behind every transition.

This piece was hand-woven on a flat loom in India over roughly 4 weeks. The weft was packed by hand against the warp without a knot, building a tight reversible fabric that sits flush to the floor. The brown register was dyed at the yarn before the weft entered the loom, which is what gives the colour its even depth and lets the field hold its register on both faces.

The composition

A composition built around a brown ground that anchors the field with the warmth of walnut. The pattern develops at a measured pace and the colour holds its register across the field. Light moves across the field through the day; the morning sun pulls warmth out of the wool and the evening lamp reads it as a deeper register of the same hue.

The piece in a room

At 5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) the rug suits a compact living area, a primary bedroom with a queen frame, or a dining nook seating four. The brown ground holds the floor without claiming ownership of the room, and the geometry resolves cleanly when sofa legs and side tables sit on top of it. Front legs of upholstery on the rug, rear legs off, is the arrangement that lets the field read at full strength. Settles into rooms that already trust their architecture and uses the field to soften rather than to declare.

Care

Vacuum on the lowest suction setting, weekly. Avoid beater bars, which catch the surface yarns. Spot clean with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. The rug is reversible and can be flipped to balance wear over the years.
