The Beni Ourain weave belongs to the high Atlas, where confederations of Berber tribes have been knotting thick undyed wool against winter cold for at least a thousand years. The drawing language is reductive on purpose. A field of cream, a loose lattice of dark brown lozenges, and the occasional small cross or arrow tucked into a diamond, set down without ruler or cartoon by a weaver working from memory. The ones that survive in museums are valued not for symmetry but for the looseness of the hand that made them.

Two weavers shared the loom in India for around four months. The wool is undyed and hand-spun, lanolin still in the fibre, which is what gives a Beni its faintly silvered shine and its resistance to soiling. The lozenges are knotted in a deep walnut brown that reads almost black in low light and warms to the colour of espresso under direct sun.

The composition

An ivory ground, weaver's irregularity intact. A diamond lattice in walnut brown drawn freehand, lines wandering by a centimetre here or there in the way that distinguishes a real Beni from a printed copy. Small fertility marks dot the larger diamonds. The pile is long and shaggy, twelve to fifteen millimetres, so that the lozenges sit slightly recessed against the cream and the whole field reads as a low relief.

What you are buying

Vintage Berber rugs from the Atlas, when sourced through European dealers, run from four to twelve thousand euros for a comparable size. This is a new piece woven by hand in undyed wool to the same loose vocabulary, with the structural integrity of a fresh weaving. The rug softens and silvers over the next decade. It appreciates rather than depreciates.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) suits a modern living room with low-slung seating, a primary bedroom with the bed floating off the headboard wall, or a reading corner with a single armchair and floor lamp. The cream pulls light into a shaded room. The rug pairs well with raw oak, blackened steel, brass, and sheepskin.

Conservation

Shake out monthly if the rug is small enough to handle, otherwise vacuum on low suction. Rotate every six months. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and let the lanolin do most of the work; an undyed Beni resists staining better than any dyed pile. Professional hand wash every six to seven years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
