The carpets that the trade now calls Moroccan were almost unknown outside North Africa until the 1920s, when French colonial collectors began bringing them home. The form entered the modern design canon in earnest after the war, when post-war taste turned away from ornament and toward the kind of pared geometry the Berber tradition had been working in for centuries. The composition

Natural carries the field. The motifs sit in measured intervals across the field, with the border holding the composition rather than competing with it. The wool will lighten in the high-light areas over the next decade and the dyes will deepen in the protected zones, the pattern of slow change every plant-dyed pile carries. The corners will not match exactly, which is the proof that a person rather than a printer made the surface. The wool is the carrier here, accepting the colour without flattening it and holding the slight variations of dye lot that read as life rather than as flaw.

Hand-knotted wool in this density is increasingly rare at this price point. The Indian workshops that still keep the weave alive are running on margins that have not moved in two decades, while the equivalent antique at a Western dealer trades at three to four times this number. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the property no machine production can claim.

A hand-wash by a wool-experienced cleaner every five to seven years restores the lustre that household dust slowly dulls. With proper care the rug runs a century. A felt or wool pad underneath protects the foundation from hard floors and adds a softness underfoot that the pile alone does not provide.
