The dhurrie has lived in subcontinental domestic and palace interiors for a thousand years, a flat-weave form that survived the arrival of pile rug under the Mughals because its lighter weight and reversibility suited the climate and the season. This rug works the neutral side of that historical palette.
Two weavers carried the loom for 3 weeks, the weft beaten down hard against the warp with a hand comb at every pass. The structure is reversible end to end; either face can sit up. The jute / sisal is hand-spun before weaving, the strands twisted to a working diameter the loom can absorb without buckling. Hand-spun yarn carries a small irregularity in twist that gives the woven surface its slightly textile rather than industrial character. The same fibre worked on a powered loom would lose that quality.
The composition
The composition runs in natural and an answering second tone, the two colours meeting at clean, deliberate joins where the design changes. The colour holds steady because flat-weave does not produce the directional pile shading a cut-pile rug carries. The colour will move slightly over the first year of use as the dye sets into its final register and the natural light exposure works the saturation toward its long-term level. A flat-weave does not arrive complete; it settles into its finished state over the first season.
The piece in a room
5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) is sized for an entry hallway, an open dining footprint, a sun room, or a verandah with covered seating. The natural carries the rough, structural quality the form has had since the Bengal floodplains began producing the fibre commercially.
Care
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Spot clean with mild soap on a clean cloth and blot dry. A flat-weave can be dry cleaned by a textile specialist every two to three years. Reverse seasonally to even out the wear; both faces are working surfaces and the rug benefits from rotation. Avoid extended direct sun on saturated areas of the dye, and use a thin underlay to keep the rug from sliding on hardwood or stone.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
