The tufting gun arrived in the mid twentieth century and changed what large-format wool rugs could cost. The hand stayed essential. A skilled tufter draws the design through the canvas the way an etcher draws a plate, building the field row by row, judging colour balance and density without lifting the work to the front.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over 8 weeks by a small team of two tufters and a finisher. Wool pulled through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time, then bonded at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The pile was sheared by hand at the end so the brown field sits clean against any contour the design holds, and the rug was washed and dried flat to set the surface.

The composition

Botanical drawing over a brown ground that anchors the field with the warmth of walnut. Stems and blossoms drawn loosely enough to read as natural rather than as catalogue. The repeat is large enough to carry a long room without forcing the eye to count. The geometry holds at distance and rewards close looking, which is the test a long-lived design has to pass to stay in production for more than a season.

The piece in a room

At 9' × 12' (274 × 366 cm) the rug operates at drawing-room scale. The brown field carries a sectional sofa, a six-to-eight seat dining table, or a king bed with both nightstands above the pile. This is the size at which the rug becomes the work the room is arranged around rather than the surface that sits beneath it. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation and direct daylight restores the dye depth that interior light slowly washes out. Holds its own next to large-scale art and works against a single accent piece rather than a busy gallery wall.

Care

Vacuum gently each week, no beater bar. Loose surface fibres will shed for the first month and a half; the body of the pile is unaffected. Spot care by blotting only. A professional clean every two to three years keeps the colour and the latex backing in good condition.
