Multi-coloured Indian wool carpets in the Opera idiom trace back to mid-century weaving studios that broke from the strict two-tone Persian palette and started building rugs that could share a room with a Rothko print or a wall of contemporary photography. The pattern is transitional, neither tribal nor classical, designed by studio cartoonists working over Mughal floral templates with modern colour theory pulled from the Bauhaus weaving school.

Two weavers worked the loom in India for roughly three months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool tied in the Persian asymmetric knot against a cotton foundation. Wool was hand-carded, then washed in soft water before entering the dye vats. The colour set used here moves through ten distinct hues, each one matured in the vat for eight to twelve days before the wool was lowered, which is the only way a rug carrying this many colours can avoid muddiness.

The composition

An open multi field organised around scattered medallions and floral sprays that drift across the surface without a strict axial centre. The palette runs ivory through coral, sage, ochre, slate, and walnut. Each colour is allowed its own breathing room. From across a room the rug reads as a soft tonal field; up close it resolves into individual flowers, leaves, and vine fragments worked in subtle shading. The wool will warm its highlights into bone over the first decade.

What you are buying

A pure-wool hand-knotted multi rug in this scale, sold through Western galleries or design-house showrooms, sits in the $3,500 to $7,000 range once shipping and dealer margin are included. Here the buyer purchases the same construction directly from the source. Hand-knotted wool with vegetable-dye stability appreciates with use, while printed or tufted equivalents lose definition by year three.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) suits a primary bedroom under the foot of the bed, a small living group, or a passage between two seating areas. The multi palette pairs with neutral walls, oak or walnut floors, and upholstery in undyed linen, oatmeal wool, or chocolate leather. Avoid placing it under heavily patterned art; the rug expects to be the visual centre of gravity in its corner of the room.

Conservation

Rotate the rug each season so light and traffic distribute evenly across the field. Vacuum weekly on suction, beater bar off. Blot spills with cotton and cool water and never rub the pile. Plan a professional hand wash with a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care, the rug will outlive its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
