Grey entered the formal rug vocabulary late, only after the Bauhaus and the early modernist interiors of the 1920s established the colour as a serious ground for art and furniture. The first wool grey rugs intended for the modern interior were woven by Scandinavian and continental studios in the 1930s, and the discipline they brought to a near-monochrome field is the discipline this rug belongs to. A grey rug succeeds when the wool is consistent and the silk highlights are placed with restraint.
Two to three weavers shared the loom for around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool combined with silk highlight yarn, knotted against a cotton warp at a density tight enough to read as a single luminous field across the room. The grey is built up from three close tonal yarns rather than one. The eye reads them as one colour and the surface as one ground.
The composition
A field of soft mid grey with a quieter central reserve and a single guard border at the perimeter. Silk highlight yarn is set in slow tonal arabesques that catch raking light and disappear under direct overhead light. The rug reads as a cool ground in daylight and warms slightly under lamp light at night. Pattern is intentionally minimal. The rug is built to function as a considered surface, not as competition for the room's other graphic elements.
What you are buying
Comparable wool and silk grey-ground carpets in this idiom sell through Western dealers between eighteen and thirty-five thousand dollars. This is a contemporary weaving in the same drawing language, on the same loom, at the same density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The silk highlights bloom forward as the wool wears slightly to expose them.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living arrangement with all seating floating on the pile, a six-seat dining setting, or a primary bedroom. Grey suits a wide range of upholstery without conflict. Pale plaster walls let the rug behave as a cool ground; deeper walls let it settle into the architecture. Brass, walnut, blackened steel, and natural linen all sit well above it.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum twice a week, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub a silk-blended pile. Hand wash by a wool and silk trained conservator every five years. Cared for this way the rug lasts seventy years and longer.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
