The composition is built around a contemporary field. Everything else in the weaving works in service of it, the borders narrowed, the corners simplified, the palette held in tight register. The discipline of that subtraction is what turns a serviceable rug into a considered piece of work.
On a vertical loom in India, 1 weaver worked the cartoon for about 2 months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool. Foundation in cotton. Knot count comes to roughly 259,200, each one tied by feel. After the rug came off the loom it was washed in soft water and stretched flat to align the rows, a finishing process that takes another two weeks on its own.
The composition
The palette is held in blue, with the contemporary motifs picked out in tones that sit a half-step away from the ground rather than fighting against it. The colour interaction is the work of plant dye, not pigment, which is why no two viewings under different light read the same. Morning sun pulls one set of values forward; evening lamp light brings out the cooler register that sits underneath.
What you are buying
Auction rooms in London and New York place hand-knotted pieces of this lineage and density well above the figure here. The economics work because the loom sits in India, where the craft has been transmitted continuously for centuries, rather than in a Western workshop with imported labour.
The piece in a room
2'6" x 6' (76 x 183 cm). Lighter walls push the blue forward as a focal field; darker walls let it settle into the architecture. The blue field sits comfortably with leather, linen, brass, and the warm woods, less comfortably with strongly patterned upholstery.
Conservation
Care is preservation, not maintenance. Rotate the rug twice yearly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Address spills with a clean cotton cloth and water, never solvents. A conservator's wash every five years restores the lustre. The weaving will run for generations.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
