The story of overdyeing is a story of patience. A Persian-tradition rug is woven in the conventional way, with all the labour of a hand-knotted rug, and only then does the second life begin. The pile is sheared shorter than usual, the rug is washed in an antique solution that strips a controlled percentage of surface dye, and finally the whole rug is lowered into a tub of hand-mixed red dye for full immersion. The Overdyed Red 6' x 9' carries this entire process, the original Persian pattern now showing as faint underdrawing beneath a unified saturated ground.

Three weavers shared the loom in India over five months for the original pattern. Around 1.1 million asymmetric knots tied by hand on a cotton warp, then trimmed, antique-washed, and overdyed in a single immersion bath of vegetable-toned red dye. The base wool is pure yarn-dyed and the cotton foundation gives the rug the flat stability that holds for decades.

The composition

The rug reads as a single colour from across the room and reveals itself as a layered painting at close range. There is the deep red of the surface dye, the cooler ghost of the original Persian floral or medallion beneath it, and the slight tonal variation that comes from a hand-mixed bath that never lands the dye in perfectly uniform measure across every fibre. Over years of use the surface red will mellow toward brick, while the ghosted pattern becomes more legible, the rug gaining rather than losing pattern depth with age.

What you are buying

Comparable overdyed Persian rugs at named Western dealers in this size cross three lakh rupees and antique pieces with documented provenance reach considerably higher. The rug here is a new weaving with the full overdye treatment and the original hand-knotted base. Wool at this density appreciates with use, and the overdye specifically rewards long ownership because the underlying pattern grows clearer with each year.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the working size for a medium living room, a generous dining footprint, or the foot of a king bed. Overdyed red works against pale plaster walls without competition and pulls the warmth out of cooler stone or concrete floors. The single saturated palette pairs particularly well with mid-century modern furniture, with industrial steel hardware, and with rooms that already carry one or two strong art pieces on the walls.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn twice a year so traffic patterns even out across the field. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar disengaged. Address spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never rubbing. Engage a wool-trained conservator for a hand wash every five to seven years to preserve the overdye depth.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
