Red overdye is the colour of the contemporary loft interior. The shade lives in the chromatic neighbourhood of madder root and Persian lacquer but with the surface saturation of post-1990s American interior design, where bold single colours took over from the muted palettes of the previous generation. Achieving the depth of red required to hold a room without going acidic is the central challenge of the overdye process, and is best solved by laying the new dye over wool that already carries decades of layered colour underneath.

The 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) rug was woven in India by three weavers across approximately four months. The base was a previously knotted Ziegler-tradition wool field on a cotton foundation, washed and sheared to a uniform low pile, then submerged in a single immersion bath of saturated red dye. The aged wool absorbed the red at slightly different intensities depending on the colour of the under-drawing, leaving a deep field with the architectural detail of the original rug visible as a soft chromatic ghost beneath the new wash.

The composition

A confident saturated red across the entire field, lifted in places where the under-drawing rose ivory and softened in places where the under-drawing was already deep-toned. The original Ziegler vine and palmette pattern surfaces beneath the dye like a watermark, never assertive enough to compete with the new red but always present as a textural and chromatic event. The whole reads as one architectural ground at distance and as a layered textile object up close.

What you are buying

Overdyed wool carpets in this size and construction sell at Western interior dealers in the three to five thousand pound range. The pricing on this listing represents direct workshop sourcing from India. The rug itself is a fully constructed Ziegler-tradition wool piece overlaid with a single colour discipline, which means the rug arrives with two distinct layers of value. Use only deepens the patina across the decades and the rug appreciates with honest wear rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

A red field at eight by ten gives a room a confident chromatic anchor. The rug sits well under a long sofa in cream linen or oatmeal bouclé, with the front legs on the field. Reads beautifully in a study or library where leather and walnut warm the red further. Pairs cleanly with brass lighting, white plaster walls, and raw oak floors. Pairs poorly with strongly patterned upholstery; the rug expects to lead the chromatic decisions in the room.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth from the outside in. Schedule a wool conservator wash every five to seven years. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight on any single strip. With this care the rug has the better part of a century of useful life ahead of it.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
