The overdyed patchwork rug came out of the Istanbul workshops in the 1990s. Old Anatolian carpets, often beyond economic restoration as full pieces, were cut apart, washed clean of their original colour and re-dyed in single saturated tones, then sewn back together as a quilt of histories.
Two weavers and a finisher worked the rug over six to seven weeks. Wool was pushed through stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, then the back was sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was done by hand with long shears, cutting the pile down so the design reads in relief above the field. Hand-spun wool, washed after finishing to settle the colour and bring the surface to its sheared finish.
The composition
Rust, blue and green carries the field. The geometry holds at distance and resolves into smaller incident on approach, so the rug rewards both walking past and sitting beside. The wool was washed after weaving to settle the dye and bring the surface to a low matte sheen that catches changing light differently in the morning than in the evening. Saturation tightens in lamplight; the cooler tones lift in daylight. The piece will continue to settle into its palette across the first year of use. Photographic accuracy was never the goal; the colour the rug carries in person is warmer and more variable than any image of it can suggest.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' is the working living-room scale for a flat or a primary bedroom. The rug holds a three-seater sofa with a chair on each side, or floats centred under a six-seat dining table. Walnut or oak floors set the palette off; pale stone lets the rug carry the room as the dominant ground colour. Furniture sits with the front legs on the rug and the back legs on the floor, which is the canonical living-room arrangement at this size.
Care
Vacuum weekly on suction only; the beater bar will pull fibre out of any tufted pile regardless of price point. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and work from the outside in; never rub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks of normal use as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile. The body of the rug is unaffected. Professional dry clean every two to three years to preserve the wool finish.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
