A tufted rug earns its weight from density rather than knot count. Loops pulled tight against a cotton scrim, sheared flat by hand with long shears, washed and finished by a separate hand. The result reads close to a knotted rug at a more democratic price and accepts the design vocabulary of contemporary studios cleanly.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over 5 weeks by a small team of two tufters and a finisher. Wool pulled through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time, then bonded at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The pile was sheared by hand at the end so the rust field sits clean against any contour the design holds, and the rug was washed and dried flat to set the surface.

The composition

A composition built around a rust ground that warms toward terracotta in lamplight. The pattern develops at a measured pace and the colour holds its register across the field. Two values of the same hue carry the field rather than one flat colour, which is why the rug holds attention without forcing it.

The piece in a room

At 5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) the rug suits a compact living area, a primary bedroom with a queen frame, or a dining nook seating four. The rust ground holds the floor without claiming ownership of the room, and the geometry resolves cleanly when sofa legs and side tables sit on top of it. Front legs of upholstery on the rug, rear legs off, is the arrangement that lets the field read at full strength. Sits well beside mid-century timber furniture, contemporary low-slung upholstery, and lighting that throws warm rather than cool light.

Care

Weekly suction vacuuming. The shedding settles within two months. Spot clean with a clean damp cloth, working from the outside of the spill inward. Have the rug dry cleaned by a textile cleaner every couple of years to lift fine dust from the base of the pile.
