Abstract floor design is barely a century old. It begins with the Bauhaus weavers and continues through the Eames studio, the Knoll textiles of the 1950s, and the Dutch Memphis movement. The composition on this rug stands in that lineage.

The composition was drawn for the floor, not for a swatch book. The polychrome field holds at the distance of standing height, the secondary motif resolves on approach, and the proportions are calibrated for room-scale viewing. The result is a rug that reads as architecture rather than as decoration.

The fibre

The fibre is heat-set polypropylene. Colour is bonded into the polymer by heat, not painted on, so the saturation holds against UV and against household cleaners both. Spills sit on the surface long enough to be lifted with a damp cloth, and the pile recovers from compression marks from furniture without the lengthy memory that wool retains. The yarn is engineered for households with children, pets, and frequent foot traffic.

The composition

The composition rewards both the across-the-room read and the up-close look. At distance, the polychrome field organises the geometry into a single coherent statement. Up close, the secondary tones and the line work resolve into the motif vocabulary the design was drawn from. The piece pairs with walnut, oak, brass, and matte iron, and it pairs poorly with strongly patterned upholstery; the rug expects to be the only graphic element in the room.

The piece in a room

5' x 7' (152 × 213 cm) is the working scale for living rooms in flats, dining areas under a six-seater table, and primary bedrooms. The polychrome register reads at distance and rewards a closer look. The piece anchors a small living group with the front legs of the sofa on the field and the side chairs floating, or covers the floor under a queen bed with a hand-span of margin past the frame.

Care

Vacuum weekly with a standard upright. Spot clean with mild detergent on a clean cotton cloth, working from the outside of the spill toward the centre. The rug accepts a cool 30°C machine wash if a spill resists spot cleaning, and dries flat in a few hours indoors. No professional cleaning required at any point in the rug's life. Furniture rotation each season prevents compression at fixed points.
