The hand-tufted rug is a contemporary medium. The drawing is laid onto stretched canvas, tufted by hand with a wool-loaded gun, then sculpted with long shears at the end. The result reads as a single field rather than as a printed pattern, and the wool tier of the construction means the colour deepens with use rather than wearing back.
The work was carried out in India over around five weeks. Two tufters pushed wool through stretched cotton canvas, the back was sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim, and a finisher took long shears across the surface to bring the drawing into relief. Done well, the technique keeps the pattern crisp for years and the saturated colour reads cleanly across the field even as the room around it changes its lighting through the day.
The composition
A green field carries the rug. The drawing sits a few millimetres above the ground, sculpted in by the finisher's shears, so the pattern reads cleanly from a standing viewer and resolves at chair-side. Yarn-dyed wool gives the colour depth that surface dyeing cannot match, and the relief catches light differently as the day moves through the room.
The piece in a room
5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) is the working scale for a primary bedroom or a medium living area. The green ground reads against warm chalk, plaster pink, or a deeper navy accent wall, and the geometry holds at viewing distance from a sofa or dining chair. Pairs with walnut, oak, linen upholstery, leather. Direct sunlight on the rug deepens the colour relationships; the piece is built to be lived on, not protected.
Care
Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot, do not rub, when something spills. Light shedding for the first month is normal and does not affect the pile density. A professional dry clean every three years restores the colour and lifts compaction in heavy-traffic spots.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
