Indian dhurrie is the workshop discipline that sits closest to the Indian house. The form was woven for floors, walls, takhats and palanquins, and its geometry was tuned to the shapes of the household rather than to the formal medallion grammar of the imported Persian rug.

The piece was woven across around three weeks by Two. The weft was packed weft by weft against a cotton warp, with the design carried in the weaver's count rather than in a paper cartoon. The flat structure means both faces of the rug carry the same image, and the piece is fully reversible. Hand-spun yarn, washed after weaving to settle the dye and bring the surface to its final feel.

The composition

Anchored in a multi-toned palette. The composition is built to be read at room scale rather than at photograph scale; the geometry resolves into its detail only when the rug is approached on foot. The wool was washed after weaving to settle the dye and bring the surface to its final feel; the slight matte sheen comes up under both window light and lamp. The piece is built to be discovered slowly. Across distance it is one quiet ground; at close range the small variations of dye and weave become visible as the trace of the hand.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' works as a punctuation rug. Place it beside a bed, under a corner armchair, or in front of an entry door, where its geometry registers on the body before it registers on the eye. The colour holds at close range and across distance; the wool carries enough body that the piece feels warm underfoot in any season.

Care

Routine care: vacuum once a week on the lowest suction setting. Reverse the piece end for end at the spring and autumn change so both faces share the wear evenly. Address spills with cold water on a clean cloth, working from the perimeter inward. Have the rug professionally dry-cleaned every three to four years to refresh the colour and clear any trapped dust from the weft.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
