Rust as a textile colour traces back to the iron-oxide-rich earth pigments of central Asian rug weaving, where local clay and madder root combined to give a warm earth tone that reads differently from Persian crimson or Anatolian carmine. A Tibetan reading of rust on a 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) loom keeps the lanolin-rich highland yarn and the senna loop technique but works the colour as a single sustained field rather than as a ground for figurative ornament. The result is a piece of soft architectural geometry, the warmth of fired terracotta translated into wool.

Two weavers shared the loom for roughly four months on this rug. The base is hand-spun, hand-carded wool on a cotton foundation, the pile tied row by row with the Tibetan senna loop wrapped over a metal rod and cut by knife. The rust comes from a single bath of madder root supplemented with walnut hull, prepared by the dyer over fifteen days before the wool was lowered. The hand-spun yarn absorbs dye unevenly by design, with thicker fibres taking less and thinner fibres taking more.

The composition

A field of warm rust that runs across the rug as a single sustained colour with shifts of intensity from yard to yard. There is no medallion, no border, no incident. The composition is the field, and the field is the wool fibre doing the work of breaking colour into half a dozen tonal grades. The rust will continue to age. Direct sunlight will warm it toward terracotta, traffic will burnish the high points of the pile, and the colour will deepen across its working life rather than fading.

What you are buying

Tibetan rust pieces at this scale are sold by Western galleries between two and a half and four lakh rupees once shipping and dealer markup are factored in. The senna construction, the hand-spun wool, the madder-and-walnut dye chain are identical to the workshops that supply that market. The piece is hand-knotted in India and appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which puts the entry price below replacement cost over the rug's working life.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a smaller sitting area, a primary bedroom flanked by side tables, or a study with a single armchair. Rust pairs with oak, walnut, raw linen, brass, and antique terracotta. White or chalk walls let the colour breathe; deep blue walls put the rust in conversation with its complement. A single graphic painting reads well above it; multiple small works will compete and should be avoided.

Conservation

Rotate end-to-end annually. Vacuum weekly using suction only with the beater bar lifted. Blot, never rub, when something spills. A specialist hand-wash every six to eight years restores the lanolin and refreshes the surface. With this care, the piece runs seventy to ninety years and the rust deepens into a colour the original dye never quite reached.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
