Purple at the deeper end of the spectrum is the colour of ecclesiastical robes, of mourning velvet, of the inside of a fig at the moment of perfect ripeness. The shade has carried symbolic weight in textile traditions across both East and West for more than two thousand years, and reproducing it on hand-knotted wool with the depth that distinguishes serious work from costume reproduction is a long-established discipline. The overdye tradition supplies the necessary depth by laying the new violet bath over the layered colour of vintage Ziegler-tradition wool.
This 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) rug was woven in India by three weavers across approximately four months. The base was a previously knotted Ziegler-tradition wool piece on a cotton foundation, washed and sheared to a uniform low pile, then submerged in a single immersion bath of deep purple dye. The aged wool absorbed the purple at varying intensities depending on the under-drawing, producing a confident saturated field with the architectural pattern of the original rug visible as a deeper chromatic ghost beneath the new wash.
The composition
A deep saturated purple across the entire field, lifted slightly where the under-drawing rose ivory and pulled darker where the original colour was already strong. The original Ziegler vine and palmette pattern surfaces as a near-black ghost beneath the new dye, present but never assertive. The whole reads as one architectural ground at distance and as a layered textile event up close. Surface variation in the hand-spun wool keeps the purple alive under interior light at every angle.
What you are buying
Overdyed Ziegler-tradition wool carpets in this size sell through Western interior dealers in the three to five thousand pound range. The pricing on this listing represents direct workshop sourcing from India and bypasses the re-sale margin entirely. The rug itself is a fully constructed Ziegler-tradition wool piece with a single colour discipline laid over the entire surface; the rug arrives with two distinct layers of value. Use only deepens the patina across the decades.
The piece in a room
Deep purple at eight by ten gives a room aristocratic gravity without going theatrical. The rug sits well under a long sofa in cream or oatmeal upholstery, with brass and walnut warming the field above. Reads beautifully under a six-to-eight seat dining table where pendant light pulls the violet undertones forward in the evening. Pairs cleanly with strong dark green walls, with chalky off-white plaster, and with oxblood leather. Avoid printed cushions or rugs in the same view.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Dark fields show lint and pet hair quickly and benefit from frequent gentle care. Blot any spill with a clean dry cotton cloth from the outside in. Schedule a wool conservator wash every five to seven years. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight on any single strip. With this care the rug has decades of useful life ahead of it.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
