Flatweave construction predates pile by several centuries. The weft passes over and under the warp without a knot, building a tight, reversible fabric that lies flush to the floor. The technique is plain. The compositions it produces are not. A flatweave reads as a graphic field rather than as a pile rug, which is why it sits so easily inside contemporary architecture.

This piece was hand-woven on a flat loom in India over roughly 4 weeks. The weft was packed by hand against the warp without a knot, building a tight reversible fabric that sits flush to the floor. The blue register was dyed at the yarn before the weft entered the loom, which is what gives the colour its even depth and lets the field hold its register on both faces.

The composition

A repeating lattice over a saturated blue with a faint green shift from the over-dye bath. The geometry is calm enough to disappear when the room is busy and assertive enough to hold the floor when the room is quiet. The relief between the lattice line and the field deepens as the pile settles. What looks like a single colour at the door resolves into three or four close tones once you stand on the rug, which is the property that separates wool work from printed alternatives.

The piece in a room

At 5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) the rug suits a compact living area, a primary bedroom with a queen frame, or a dining nook seating four. The blue ground holds the floor without claiming ownership of the room, and the geometry resolves cleanly when sofa legs and side tables sit on top of it. Front legs of upholstery on the rug, rear legs off, is the arrangement that lets the field read at full strength. Suits open-plan rooms where the floor needs a defined zone without a visual wall to mark it.

Care

Vacuum weekly using suction only. Rotate the rug end for end every six months to balance the wear. Blot spills, never rub. A flatweave cleans well by hand wash with mild detergent and cold water; for larger spills consult a textile cleaner. Reverses well, which extends the life of the rug.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
