Flatweave carpets carry a different weight from pile rugs. They sit lower against the floor, they show their structure, and they age by softening rather than by compressing. The technique is older than knotting and continues to be made by hand on the same simple frame loom that has served the tradition for generations. The structure is honest: what you see on the surface is the same yarn that holds the back together.

Jute and a cotton warp, woven flat in India over three weeks. The yarn is hand-spun before it reaches the loom; the colours are dyed before they reach the weaver. The construction is heavy and stable, which is what lets a jute kilim sit on a hard floor without underlay and stay flat through years of household use.

The composition

A multi palette held inside a flat geometric grid. Hand-spinning gives each thread a slight variation in diameter; hand-dyeing gives each batch a slight variation in tone. The rug is alive on the floor in a way no industrial flatweave manages. The construction also means the rug can be washed, beaten, and aired more aggressively than a knotted rug, which is why the kilim survived as a working household object for so long.

The piece in a room

2'6" x 10' (76 × 305 cm) is the accent scale: under a coffee table, in a foyer, at the foot of a bed. Use it where the floor needs a single considered note rather than a full carpeted ground. The multi palette sits well against mid-tone walls and warm wood floors. Mid-saturation upholstery in linen, cotton, or undyed wool reads cleanly against the field; deeper tones in leather and walnut anchor the room from above.

Care

Shake the rug out monthly. Vacuum on a low setting, suction only, no brush bar. Spot-clean spills with cool water and a mild wool detergent. The flatweave will lay flatter over the first few weeks of use as the fibre relaxes into the room. Send for a professional hand wash every three to four years to keep the colour clean and the structure honest.
