By the 1990s, Istanbul's Grand Bazaar dealers had started running a particular kind of workshop in the back rooms behind the rug stalls. Old village rugs, mid-twentieth-century pieces past their commercial prime, were being cut into rectangles, sutured together along their edges, and submerged in dye vats that carried no relationship to the original palette. Green was one of the first over-dyes the workshops attempted at scale because the pigment behaves predictably across older wool. The rug here belongs to the same family.
This 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) piece took roughly four months on the loom for three weavers, with the patchwork assembly and the dye process accounting for an additional six weeks. The wool is hand-knotted on a cotton foundation. The bath was a single deep green, alkaline-set so the pigment penetrated through the body of each fibre rather than coating its surface.
The composition
The dominant note is a forested green that shifts olive in direct light and almost teal in shadow. Inside the green, the seams of the patchwork divide the field into irregular blocks. Within each block, the bleached-then-dyed surface holds traces of the rug it came from, palmettes, a Heriz medallion fragment, a tribal gul, all softened into texture rather than image. The rug reads as one continuous green field at distance and as a quiet archive on close approach.
What you are buying
Western dealers price comparable over-dyed patchwork rugs of this size between $5,000 and $9,000 depending on stock condition and dye depth. The retail MSRP here was set against that benchmark. At its current price the rug sits well below those comparables. Hand-knotted wool with a stripped-and-redyed pile gains depth as the dye settles into the lanolin of the fibre over the first decade of use. The piece appreciates rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
The 7' x 10' footprint suits a sitting area around a sofa pulled away from the wall, a primary bedroom with a queen bed, or a small dining room under a six-seater table. The green wants warm wood, oak or walnut, and walls in chalk, bone, or a deeper saturated cream. It also reads beautifully against terracotta tile. Brass, leather, and unfinished oak furniture all carry the colour without competing.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Rotate the rug a quarter turn each season so foot traffic distributes evenly across the field. Spot-treat spills with cool water and a cotton cloth, applied gently rather than rubbed. A specialist wool wash every six years will reset the surface and lift residual dust from the deep pile.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
