Green is the rarest direction in the overdyed patchwork canon. Most of the early production sat in red, blue, and purple because the underlying village rugs were already drawn around those grounds. A green wash asks the technique to work harder. The wool needs to take the pigment evenly enough to read as a single colour at distance, and the underlying drawings need to come through as ghost lines rather than as competing motifs. This rug, in a sage-leaning olive, is one of the more disciplined readings of the family.

Three weavers worked together across roughly four months on this 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) piece. The source fragments were drawn from older village carpets, trimmed to a uniform pile, and scoured to remove their original surface colour. The wool was then immersed in a controlled green bath that combined plant-based and modern pigment into a stable mid-saturation tone. After dyeing the panels were stitched together by hand with cotton thread, supported with a fresh foundation, and warm-washed to soften and unify the surface.

The composition

The rug presents as a single muted green field with an internal grid formed by the seams between fragments. Underneath the wash, the original drawings continue to operate as soft tonal shifts rather than as legible pattern. A medallion fragment in one section, a botanical scroll in another, the lower edge of a prayer arch in a third. The slow shifts between panels come from the wool itself, which absorbed the dye at different rates depending on its age and prior history.

What you are buying

Comparable overdyed patchworks in green at Western galleries run from $5,000 to $10,000 depending on size. This rug clears at £4,399 against an MSRP of £,77,300. Each example is a one-off because the constituent fragments are. There is no second copy available anywhere, ever. The supply of older village wool of suitable quality is shrinking, which puts a structural floor under the long-term value of the technique.

The piece in a room

7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living group or sits under a six-seater dining table. Green of this register works particularly well in rooms that already have natural materials in them. Try it against a clay-plaster wall, with leather upholstery, brass lighting, and oak floors. It also reads beautifully under contemporary art with a strong colour field, especially in red or saturated yellow, because the muted green provides a complementary ground.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly using suction only. Beater bars accelerate the breakdown of hand-spun wool. Rotate the rug every six months so light fade and traffic stay even across the surface. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Hand wash by a wool conservator every seven years to restore lanolin and re-saturate the dye. Avoid commercial spot-cleaning sprays which strip pigment unevenly.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
