The patchwork tradition began as a way for Anatolian villages to recycle worn fragments of older carpets into something useful. By the late twentieth century, Istanbul ateliers had inverted the logic. They were buying complete vintage rugs in bulk, cutting them down, stripping the original colour out with a chemical bath, and over-dyeing the bleached wool in a single saturated tone. The pink in this rug is the result of that process. The original pattern, whatever it once was, sits underneath the dye as a faint ghost.

Three weavers shared the loom for around four months on this 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) piece. Hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, with the patchwork joins cut and reassembled by hand before the dye bath. The pink was struck in two passes to push the saturation past where a single dip would have left it, which is what gives the field its depth at low light.

The composition

A single warm pink reads as the dominant note. Look closer and the surface fractures into rectangles of slightly different tonalities, each one a fragment of a different original rug, each holding the dye a fraction differently because of the wool's age and prior history. The faint outlines of medallions, palmettes, and borders surface and recede as you walk past. The effect is closer to a colour-field painting with hidden text than to a traditional rug.

What you are buying

Comparable Istanbul over-dyed patchworks at Western dealers like ABC Rug & Home or Decorative Carpets sit between $4,500 and $8,000 for this size. The MSRP on this piece is anchored against that benchmark. At its current price, it sits well below auction comparables for similar vintage stock. Hand-knotted, over-dyed wool of this kind appreciates as the dye settles and the pile softens with foot traffic. It does not depreciate.

The piece in a room

7' x 10' is the working scale for a sitting room around a coffee table or a primary bedroom under the bed with a foot of rug showing on three sides. The pink wants pale walls, plaster, lime-wash, or warm white. It pairs easily with brass, walnut, dark velvet, and unbleached linen. Pattern on the upholstery competes; solid colour fields let the rug breathe.

Conservation

Rotate the rug once each season so light and traffic distribute evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub, and consult a wool conservator if dye lifts. A specialist hand-wash every six to seven years will keep the over-dyed pink saturated for the long life of the piece.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
