The patchwork overdye tradition began in workshop districts during the 1990s, when weavers started cutting down faded Anatolian carpets, sorting the pieces by tone, and re-stitching the fragments into new fields before lowering the whole composition into a single colour vat. The result is a rug that carries the sun-bleach and foot-wear of the older pieces beneath a saturated finish skin. The technique is now practiced by Indian workshops trained in the same patchwork logic, with hand-knotted base carpets joined and overdyed in deep tonal washes.
This piece was produced over four months by three weavers working at adjacent looms. Wool was hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at standard pile depth, the fragments hand-stitched along the grain so the seams sit invisible in the pile, then submerged in an aniline purple bath until the colour took to saturation. Faint traces of the original carpets, ochre, faded madder, ivory, deep indigo, sit underneath the purple as ghost geometry.
The composition
A field of saturated purple, carrying the muted under-pattern of the source rugs as low contrast incident. Some panels read clean, others retain the visible repeat of a medallion or border fragment. The colour is not flat. Areas absorbed more dye, others less, which gives the surface the broken plane of a Rothko field rather than the uniform finish of a printed textile. The eye reads it as a single considered ground from a distance and as a layered archive on approach.
What you are buying
Genuine vintage overdyed Anatolian patchworks at this scale move through Western dealers in the £1,800 to £3,200 band. This rug, hand-knotted in India to the same construction logic, lists at 94,399 against an MSRP of 3,77,300. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the fragments inside it are themselves twenty to forty years old.
The piece in a room
7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a primary living area or a generous dining footprint. Saturated purple sits well against bone, plaster, off-white, raw oak, and warm wood. It carries brass and bronze hardware and rejects rose-gold. Pair with low velvet or linen upholstery and a single piece of strong wall art rather than a gallery wall.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light wears evenly across the seams. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Address spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed flat, never rubbed in circles. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years to lift compacted soil from the foundation. With this care the rug runs sixty years and develops a deeper patina across each decade.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
