The Ziegler design vocabulary was built in the 1880s when a European trading firm asked Persian master weavers to thin the dense classical floral repeats into something an English drawing room could read. The weavers kept the vine work and the palmettes but opened up the field, dropped a colour or two, and softened the saturation. What survived from that experiment is the visual language used in this rug, where the pattern carries authority without crowding the eye.

Two weavers worked the loom in India for around five months. Roughly 2.3 million knots tied by hand on a cotton warp, finished with a wool weft and washed three times after cutting. The pile is hand-spun wool, longer-staple than mill yarn, which is why the colour reads with depth rather than as a flat surface. The green ground was prepared from a single dye lot to keep the field even, with subtle abrash visible when the rug is viewed against the light.

The composition

A muted sage and forest green ground carries a central medallion with palmettes and arabesque vine. Ivory and soft rust pick out the floral repeats. The border holds two guard bands rather than three so the field stays open. Green is the most architectural ground colour in the Persian repertoire because it sits naturally with both warm wood and cool stone without favouring either. The rug will pull the green toward olive over the next decade as the wool oxidises.

What you are buying

A hand-knotted rug of this density and fibre quality from the antique market would carry a price several multiples above this listing. The work that goes into the loom is the same. The wool is the same grade of New Zealand stock used by London and New York dealers selling at three lakh and above. At £.35 lac this is the entry point for a serious collector and the natural step up for a buyer replacing a machine-made rug with the real thing.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) suits a primary living room with a three-seat sofa and two armchairs floated above the rug, or a dining room with a six-seat table where the chairs sit fully on the pile when pulled out. The green ground reads beautifully against limewashed walls, against pale oak panelling, and against the warm yellow of brass picture lights. Bookshelves in walnut hold the palette together.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year so traffic and sunlight age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, no beater bar. Treat spills with a clean cloth and cold water, blotting from the outside in. A professional wool wash every five years lifts embedded dust the vacuum cannot reach. With this care the rug stays in service for fifty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
