A green-ground Ziegler is the rarer member of the design family. The earliest workshops focused on rust, beige, and ivory because the British market wanted those grounds, and green was held back for commissions where the room itself wanted a cooler floor. The pattern in front of you is a contemporary weaving in that green-ground tradition, drawn against the same restraint the original commissions called for.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five and a half months. Hand-spun wool was tied to a cotton foundation and finished through a slow, three-rinse wash that drew the colour down into the settled, walked-in register a Ziegler is collected for. The green ground was built in a two-bath indigo over-dye with a pomegranate undercoat, matured for a fortnight before the wool was lowered. The lattice tones were drawn from walnut hull for the beige, madder root for the rose accents, and a small lot of oak gall for the deeper browns.

The composition

A medium green field carrying a floral lattice in beige, soft walnut, and faded rose, framed by a slim guard band that closes the composition without elaboration. The green carries a deeper saturation than the lighter Ziegler greens because the indigo over-dye was held in the bath an extra week. Read in window light the field shifts a half-tone warmer in late afternoon, and that movement is what an antique green ground does and what a synthetic green never will. Over the next decade the green will deepen toward forest.

What you are buying

True green-ground Zieglers of this scale, in vegetable-dyed hand-spun wool, sell through Western dealers at the equivalent of four to seven lakh and through auction at slightly less when condition permits. At ninety-nine thousand against a list of nearly four lakh, the rug is a piece woven to the antique density in the original fibre. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating and the rarity of the green ground compounds that appreciation.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working drawing-room scale. A green field reads cooler than rust or beige and pairs particularly well with walnut joinery, brass fittings, and lime-plaster walls in the cream-to-stone range. Strong red or orange upholstery competes with the rug; quieter linens, leathers, and washed cottons sit cleanly within it.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the green ages evenly under window light. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth immediately, working from the outer edge inward. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five years and request cool-water rinsing to protect the indigo over-dye. Properly maintained the rug runs ninety years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
