Rust as a ground colour in the Ziegler vocabulary descends from the late nineteenth-century commissions in which Manchester firms asked weavers to soften classical Persian saturation into a register more compatible with Edwardian rooms. The result was a particular kind of warm orange-red, drawn from layered madder, that reads as fired terracotta rather than as the deeper garnets of court Persian work.

This 8' x 10' rug was hand-knotted in India by three weavers across roughly five months. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in small batches so the rust ground carries tonal abrash along its length, the soft striping that reads as life rather than as defect in a vegetable-dyed piece. The cartoon was prepared from period Ziegler floral studies and read at the loom knot by knot. The back was clipped to lift the floral drawing into clean relief over the field.

The composition

A warm rust ground holds an open central medallion in faded indigo, ivory, and a softer rose. The vine work spreads into the corners with the relaxed grace only a hand-prepared cartoon allows. The border is a single quiet guard band, drawn in indigo to frame rather than dominate. Over a decade of use the rust will lighten by perhaps a half tone toward a softer terracotta, and the indigo accents will deepen, the way well-dyed Zieglers always settle.

What you are buying

Period Zieglers in this drawing standard and condition appear at international auction at twenty-five to seventy thousand US dollars; rust-ground pieces sit at the upper end of that range because the colour ages particularly gracefully. This is a new weaving in the same cartoon tradition and the same vegetable system. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There are not many household purchases of which that is true.

The piece in a room

The rust ground reads warm against pale plaster, cream, and putty walls, and sits without strain against walnut and oak floors. 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living room or a six-to-eight seat dining footprint. Pair with leather, brass, and unbleached linen; avoid layering against patterned upholstery, which competes with the floral drawing.

Conservation

Rotate end for end every six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth and never apply hot water. Vegetable-dyed wool benefits from indirect daylight; the colours mature rather than fade under it. Plan a wool-trained hand-wash every five years. The rug runs eighty years on this schedule and gains soft surface depth as the wool's lanolin layer matures.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
