Green is the most difficult colour to achieve in a vegetable-dyed rug. There is no single plant that yields a stable green pigment, and every traditional green in the historical record is built from two dye baths, an indigo blue overdyed across a yellow base of weld, sumac, or oak gall. The order matters. The mordant matters. The temperature of the second bath matters. A green Ziegler at this depth is the result of dye discipline that very few workshops still hold.
Two to three weavers worked the loom for roughly four months on this 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) piece. The yellow underbath used oak gall matured in a copper vat for two weeks. The indigo overdye was lowered three times with intermediate oxidation between dips. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, tied with the Persian asymmetric knot. The finish was a long mineral wash that lays the antiqued bloom that defines the Ziegler revival vocabulary.
The composition
A green field carries floral and vine work in cream, ivory, and deeper olive tones drawn from the same dye programme. The green is not a single saturated note. It carries the slight warmth that a yellow underbath produces and the slight tonal drift that successive indigo dips create, which together give the surface a depth that flat synthetic green cannot reach. The colour will deepen over the years as the wool oxidises in light.
What you are buying
A vegetable-dyed Ziegler weaving in the green register at this density and finish is unusual in the contemporary market and trades through European dealers between 2 and 4 lakh rupees when stocked. The constraint is dye knowledge rather than weave capacity. A piece bought at this price reflects a direct line to the workshop and the absence of dealer-room markup. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) sits well under a small living arrangement, a four-seat dining table, or as the principal floor in a study or library. The green palette pairs with walnut, brass, and oxblood leather. Cream plaster walls let the green carry the room. Avoid cool grey walls. The temperature mismatch flattens the dye depth.
Conservation
Rotate a quarter turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic distribute evenly. Vacuum on low suction with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton towel pressed flat. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the piece every five to six years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
